VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS FROM JULY 3
Winged Sprint feature winner Mark Aldrich
Josh Hadley Memorial marks midway point of season
Butler Speedway's annual fireworks display will begin the second half of the season at the track this Saturday, July 10. Last Saturday's Joshua Hadley Memorial marked the conclusion of the first half of the season as trophies were given away to all winners and bikes went out to several lucky kids in the stands. Feature wins went to Mark Aldrich (winged sprints), Tommy Beezley (UMP Modifieds), Eric Swan (Sportsman), and Glenn Heath (Street Stocks).
It was the first win of 2010 for Aldrich, who started alongside Chad Blonde in the front row for the 25-lap winged sprint feature. Aldrich jumped to the early lead, then was able to hold Blonde at bay during a race that saw several cautions. Gary Fast followed the duo at the checker and took his second-straight top 3 finish. Doug Zimmerman was fourth, while current North Carolina resident and 1988 Butler champion Brad Wickham was fifth. The rest of the top 10 were Dan Hall, Rocky LoPresto, Bill Jacoby, and Chad Hart.
Winged sprint heat races went to Zimmerman, Fast, and Dan Hall.
Ken Mackey, a nine-time track champion, leads the winged sprint standings at the midway point of the season.
Although he has yet to garner a feature win this season, the Manituo Beach driver has second-place finishes on May 15, May 29, and June 19. Other feature victories this season in the class have went to Doug Zimmerman (second in standings), Chad Blonde, Dan Hall, Brian Lay, Ryan Grubaugh, and Jared Horstman (SOD).
Beezley became the first repeat winner this season in the modifieds and leads the standings in that class at the half way point. The defending champion took his other victory during the May 15 opener, and had second-place runs on May 22 and May 29. He started on the pole for Saturday's feature and led throughout. Greg Socha trailed Beezley at the checker, with front-row starter John Swift taking third. Josh Lolmaugh and Jake Rendel completed the top five. The rest of the top 10 were Brian Przepiora, Ryan Cripe, Ray Jackson, last season's point runner-up Mike Tarlton, and Matt Eagen.
Heat races in the modifieds were won by Swift, Beezley, and Mike Langdon. Przepiora won the 'B' Main.
A former sportsman division champ, Eagen is campaigning a modified for the first time this season and has made his way into the top 5 in the standings, the best of several rookies in the class. Besides Beezley's two wins in the class so far, other fearure checkers have went to Zeke McKenzie, Kevan Free, Ray Jackson (first career), and Josh Lolmaugh (points runner-up).
Marty French leads the way in the sportsman standings and he held the point early during Saturday's Mid-Season Championship feature for that class. But Swan drove past and went on to claim his third feature victory this season, remaining as the only repeat winner in the division. Swan is racing a part-time schedule and is not in the top five of the standings. Other sportsman feature checkers this season have went to Steve Langdon, Jake Rendel, and defending champion Logan Beckwith.
It's been the Glenn Heath, Keith Hiller and Bob Dooley show in the street stocks during the first half of the 2010 season. Heath leads the standings, finishing in the top two in five of the seven races so far. Heath won the season opener and took first in Saturday's feature during the Hadley Memorial. Hiller has three feature wins and has finished in the top three on five occassions. Dooley took checkers on May 29 and June 19.
