Jake Rendel takes two Butler checkers on August 28

Seeing a member of the Rendel family in victory lane at Butler Speedway is nothing new. But having the same member of the class-act racing family taking checkers in two different divisions is a more rare occasion. On Saturday, Jake Rendel took the feature wins in the UMP Modified and Sportsman classes. Other feature winners were Dan Hall (winged sprints) and Todd Thoms (street stocks).

Jake Rendel's first feature win of the evening came in the sportsman class with a last lap pass of Steve Langdon. Points leader Marty French started in the front row for the sportsman feature and led the way until mechanical woes forced him to the infield. Langdon then took over and led a good portion of the race, but wasn't able to hold Rendel at bay at the checker. The final caution of the race came nine laps from the end, with Langdon, Rendel, and defending champ Logan Beckwith holding the top three spots. On the restart, Rendel had all he could do to just hold Beckwith at bay, and the Hanover driver actually got around on one occassion and was challenging Langdon for the lead. But Rendel was able to get back past Beckwith, and as the leaders took the white flag, Rendel would duck to the inside and got under Langdon in turns 1 and 2 and had a three-car length lead at the checker. Rendel, a former sportsman champ, took the win over Langdon, Beckwith, Tim Wilber, and Dwayne Feltner. Completing the top 10 were Cameron Hoaglin, Rick Swartout, Matt Bell, Wes Bates, and Bob Austin. French was 12th in the finishing order. Heat races in the sportsman went to Wilber and Bell.

Jake Rendel started inside the third row for the UMP Modified feature, with Matt Eagen and Jeff Sayles in the front row. After a three-car drag race between the duo and Corey Bevard for most of the opening lap, Bevard would pull ahead. A Matt Eagen spin brought out the first caution, and on the restart Bevard spun in turn 2. Second-place running Sayles went to the pits, and the lead for the restart went to Rendel. He spent the rest of the race at the point to take his second feature win of the night. Greg Socha was second, while first-time heat winner Jake Bailey placed third. John Heacock and last year's points runner-up Mike Tarlton completed the top five. Sixth through 10th were Eric Spencer, John Swift, Kevin Reeve, Jessi Sroufe, and Jordan Bailey. Heat races were won by Bailey, Eagen, and Tommy Beezley. The 'B' Main was won by Reeve. Tommy Beezley finished 14th and holds a 14 point lead over Josh Lolmaugh in the mod standings.

Dan Hall won his second feature of the season in the winged sprints, holding off points leader Ken Mackey. Hall and Mackey made up the front row for the 25-lap event. On several restarts Mackey dove underneath, only to see Hall regain the point as the cars came up to speed. Mackey's second-place finish gave him a 96-point lead in the standings, as the Manitou Beach driver aims for his 10th track title. Following were Doug Zimmerman, Mark Aldrich, and Shelby Bilton. The rest of the top 10 were Sean Robinson, Daryl Shaffer, Gerry Hart, Kevin Atkins, and Greg Wheeler. Heat races went to Hall, Mackey, and Tom Davies. The 'B' Main was won by Aaron Shaffer.

Todd Thoms was in third-place with a half-lap to go in the street stock feature, but benefitted when Brandon Hyliard made contact with Glenn Heath in turn 3. Thoms then beat Hyliard to the line to record his first feature win of 2010. Hyliard was credited with second, Keith Hiller was third, Bob Rendel was fourth, and Walter Otis claimed fifth. Sixth through 10th were Joe Elliott, Terry Milliman, Shawn McFeters, Jarrett Rendel, and John Ruby. Heath, the points leader, was 11th. Heat race wins went to Hiller, Thoms, Heath, and Jeremy Lutz. The 'B' Mains were won by Jeff Cummings and Tom Miller.
