Butler Motor Speedway - 2014 Sportsman Rules

  1. BATTERY
    1. Car must start under own power in the staging area.
    2. It must arrive at the track fully charged.
    3. May be located anywhere outside the driver's compartment.
    4. Must be securely mounted and covered.
  2. BRAKES
    1. All four brakes must be in working condition.
    2. Four-wheel hydraulic brakes.
    3. Neal type brake assembly permitted.
    4. No shut-off valves!
  3. CAR BODY
    1. After market bodies are allowed.
    2. Body must cover at least half of the tire.
    3. NO altering at least 14" high covering entire width of car.
    4. No side nerf bars, No modified looking bodies at all.
    5. No side windows or air deflectors allowed.
    6. No support bars blocking right exit from cockpit allowed.
    7. Rear bumper not to extend beyond quarter panel, but must fill area inside panels, tolerance, 2" each side.
    8. Stock appearing bodies only. NO EXOTIC BODIES!
    9. Stock NOSE PIECES ONLY!
    10. ROOFS
      1. All roof posts must meet inside of car.
      2. All roofs must be a minimum 41 inches and maximum 45 inches from front to back.
      3. All roofs must be a minimum 48 inches and maximum 54 inches wide from side-to-side.
      4. Front roof supports to be 2"x24".
      5. Must be a full roof.
      6. No built in fiberglass air dams. Must be stock appearing.
      7. No dished out roofs.
      8. No flat roofs.
      9. No partial roofs.
      10. No wings attached to roof or to side posts.
      11. Rounded and tapered stock appearing roofs only!
      12. SIDE VENTS: Side vents on front roof post can extend back no further than 16" bottom, then straight up to roof for an L-configuration. Side vents must meet outside of car.
  4. CLUTCH
    1. Clutch must be inside of bell housing.
    2. Must all be clutch operated (with motor running and car in still position, driver must be able to engage car in gear and move forward and backward at time of inspection).
    3. No (in and out) boxes.
  5. DRIVE SHAFT
    1. Must be painted white and must remain white all season.
    2. Must have a hoop located on the forward 1/3 to prevent it from dropping onto the track.
  6. ENGINE
    1. 3 inch set back maximum, measured from the #1 ball joint.
    2. NO ALUMINUM HEADS OR BLOCKS!
  7. FRAME
    1. All Sportsman will have minimum 104" wheelbase.
    2. All vehicles will be stripped completely of interior, except driver's seat which will be securely fastened to the roll cage, and will be equipped with a head rest or a high back racing seat and will be subject to local track inspection.
    3. CAMARO AND FIREBIRD FRONT SUB FRAMES OR UNIBODIED CARS MUST BE 1981 OR OLDER. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
    4. Must be stock front sub with stock lower control arm mounts.
    5. UNI-BODY CARS: Rear portion on uni-body cars, starting at the leaf spring mounts, may be fabricated or reinforced. The front sub and rear clip must be connected with MINIMUM 2"x2" square tubing.
  8. FUEL
    1. Both racing fuel and alcohol are allowed.
  9. FUEL CELL
    1. Alcohol cars need a mandatory shut off value in drivers compartment.
    2. Eight (8) inch ground clearance.
    3. FUEL CELLS ARE MANDATORY!
    4. Must have approved safety loop behind the fuel cell.
    5. Must have canister around tank.
    6. Must have check valve on fill pipe.
  10. FUEL PUMP
    1. Mechanical pumps only.
    2. No electric fuel pumps!
  11. HOODS
    1. A metal air cleaner is mandatory.
    2. Must be securely fastened, subject to track inspection.
  12. IGNITION
    1. Any stock appearing distributor.
    2. MSD ignition allowed.
    3. No crank fire ignitions.
  13. MANDATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT
    1. 5 point harness must have manufactured tag with date not to exceed 3 years old. Belts must be installed to manufacturer's specifications.
    2. All cars must have aluminum racing seat and attached directly to roll cage.
    3. All cars must run a window net on driver's side that latches at the top is mandatory.
    4. An operational 2 and a half pound minimum fire extinguisher with gauge visible for inspection purpose is mandatory.
    5. Flame retardant diver suit.
    6. Flame retardant racing gloves.
    7. Inside of roll cage must have protection padding where head can make contact.
    8. Mandatory 1/8 inch steel plate for drivers door.
    9. SNELL SA 2000 approved helmet with sticker no more than 8 years old. (In 2010 sticker must be dated after 2002)
    10. Some type of neck restraint device must be worn at all time on the track. Neck collar, Hans devise, D-cell or G-force.
  14. RADIATOR
    1. Any type of radiator may be used.
    2. Must be in front of the car and not extend through the hood.
  15. REAR END
    1. Floating rear-ends are allowed.
    2. Locked rear-ends are allowed.
    3. Quick Change rear-ends are allowed.
    4. Stock rear-ends are allowed.
  16. ROLL CAGE
    1. Cage construction should be a minimum of 1 and a half inch OD tubing (090).
    2. Four bars are required in the driver's door.
    3. Must be Grand National design with upright supports.
    4. Must have halo bar.
    5. Must have steel plate 18" x 24" x 1/8" in the driver's door, must have steel plate 6" x 12" x 1/8" behind the seat in front of the trailing arms.
    6. No aluminum tubing.
    7. The driver's seat must be securely fastened at bottom and back of the roll cage.
  17. SHOCKS
    1. No air coil-overs or struts allowed on the front or rear.
    2. One biscut allowed mounted from top of rear end housing to roll cage.
    3. One shock absorber per wheel.
    4. Steel racing shocks are OK on the front and rear.
  18. STARTER
    1. ALL CARS MUST START UNDER THEIR OWN POWER IN THE STAGING AREA!
    2. Starters must be in working order.
  19. STEERING
    1. Quick steers are ok.
    2. Rack and pinion steering is ok.
  20. SUSPENSION
    1. 2 Trailing arms, 1 pan hard bar, 1 pull bar or lift bar max.
    2. Adjustable sway bars and adjustable pan hard bars are ok.
    3. ALL BRACKETS MUST BE WELDED ON REAR END!
    4. All springs must be over 4 and a half inch in diameter.
    5. Front springs must be in stock location.
    6. Heim joints may be three quarters of an inch (minimum) all steel on rear suspension.
    7. Leaf spring cars leaf only no leaf & coils will be allowed - NO EXCEPTIONS!
    8. No 5th coils.
    9. No bird cages.
    10. No coil over eliminator.
    11. NO coil over springs!
    12. No floating suspension on axle tube.
    13. No swing arm suspension.
    14. One Coil spring and one shock on each corner.
    15. Screw jacks are allowed.
    16. Stock type mounted; steel cross shaft tubular upper control arms are permitted.
  21. TIRES
    1. Hoosier or American Racer Tires A-40, D-40, H-40 or equivalent.
  22. TRACTION CONTROL
    1. The penalty for having traction control will be loss of money and points for the night and 3 weeks off.
    2. Traction control devices are strictly prohibited.
  23. TRANSMISSION
    1. Any transmission, manual or automatic.
    2. Bert - Brinn - Falcon made for racing or must have a dis-engaugeable drive train.
    3. No direct drive systems.
    4. NO quick change transmissions.
  24. WEIGHT
    1. 2,800 lbs minimum at all times.
    2. Added weight MUST be in plain sight, painted white or silver, MUST have the car number painted on it in a contrasting color and must be readable.
    3. Loss of any weights may be grounds for disqualification.
    4. No cement or liquid style weights.
    5. No weight on rear bumper or outside the body of the car.
    6. Weights must be securely mounted to the car with the minimum of two (2) half inch bolts and nuts per 50 pounds of weight.
  25. WHEELS
    1. A commercial wheel is recommended.
    2. Car MUST be equipped with safety wheels on the right side and large safety lug nuts.
    3. Eight (8) inch wheels maximum.
    4. NO PLASTIC OR CARBON FIBER WHEEL ALLOWED!
    5. Wide 5s allowed.
  26. WINDSHIELDS
    1. If used, it must be safety glass, Lexan, or heavy screen.
    2. NO MIRRORS ALLOWED!
    3. Windshields are optional.
  27. WRECKER HOOK UP
    1. Both must be easily accessible.
    2. Cable or chain preferred.
    3. If there are no wrecker hooks on the car, it will be pushed, towed, or dragged to the infield until after the racing program is completed.
    4. Tow hook cannot extend in front of car.
