| Rankin drives to Butler win |
|
Quincy, Mi. (7/5/08) - Jeff Rankin went by Aaron Smith at the flagstand on lap 11 and led the rest of the way to record Saturday's winged sprint feature at Butler Speedway. It was the Josh Hadley Memorial Race. The event was held in front of the largest crowd of the season, and topped off with a huge fireworks display.
Other feature winners were Corey Bevard (late models), Mike Langdon (sportsman), and Jarrett Rendel (street stocks). Rankin came from a starting spot outside of the third row to take his first feature victory of the season for the Zabonick Concrete team. The race had two stoppages for red flags, as Kyle Simon flipped wildly off turn one on lap 7, and Aaron Shaffer spiraled on the frontstretch after contact with another car sent him careening into the wall. Aaron Smith and Bob Thoms made up the front row for the 25-lap event. Driving perhaps the best race of his career, Smith led until getting out of shape on the frontstraight. Rankin went past and led the rest of the way. Smith later spun and was 14th at the finish. Thoms was second, with nine-time track champion Ken Mackey placing third. The rest of the top 10 were Sean Robinson, Mark Broughman, Chad Goff, Gregg Dalman, Shelby Bilton, Gerry Hart, and Adam Zabonick. Sprint car heats went to Robinson, Broughman, and Robert Huisken. Bevard took his second win of the season in the late models. His win came a year after suffering a cardiac arrest during last season's July 4 race. He held command throughout the 25-lap event in his Bevard/Renshaw Motorsports mount. Scott Gaff earned second, with Derek Didone third, Terry Sroufe fourth, and Eric Spangler fifth. Sixth through tenth were Linc Stevens, Scott Reynolds, Jim O'Neil, Kenny Smoker, and Johnathan Hadley. Late model heats were won by Gaff and Spangler. Langdon recorded his first win of the season in the sportsman. Langdon and Jon Swift made up the front row for the 20-lap feature. On the initial start four-time feature winner Scott Gaff flew off turn three after contact with another car and suffered a flat tire. He would place 16th in the event. Swift led the opening lap, with another caution then forcing a restart. Swift spun in turn two, with Langdon inheriting the lead and holding the point the rest of the way. Robert Page moved from a seventh-place starting spot to second with three laps remaining, but spun in the late going and fell to ninth. Jake Rendel was second at the finish, with Jessi Sroufe third, Swift fourth, and Marty French fifth. The rest of the top 10 were Sheryll Dishaw, Matt Bell, Eric Swan, Page, and Jay Moore. Jarrett Rendel went around early leader Andrew Ritter on a lap 2 restart and led the remaining laps to take his seventh feature win in nine races in the street stocks this season. The two-time champion took the win ahead of Ritter, Bob Rendel, Sheryll Dishaw, and Zack Hiser. The rest of the top 10 were Brandon Hyliard, Todd Smith, Rob VanderPloeg, Tom Notestine, and Chas Sentel. Street stock heats went to Ritter and Jarrett Rendel.
