Broughman set for 2009 Opener

There was a time during the off-season that Mark Broughman wasn't sure he'd be behind the wheel of a winged sprint car when the 2009 season began. But with Butler Speedway set to open its season on May 2, he'll be suited up and with fresh paint and a freshened motor in his familiar #52.

"We've got all the sponsors back we've had in the past, that helped make the decision on what to do this season," said Broughman, who drove to his first Butler Speedway points title in 2008. "In this sport, without the sponsors and the help of my dad, I wouldn't be doing this."

The season-long chase for points titles begins in the May 4 opener, which is a 5-in-1 show. On tap will be the winged sprints, late models, modifieds, sportsman, and street stocks. Gates open at 4 p.m., with racing at 7:30 p.m. Grandstand addmission prices for regular events during the 2009 season remain the same. Adult admission is $12 and kids 6-12 are $5. Kids under 6 are free.

Broughman held off Adam Zabonick in last season's points race at Butler in the winged sprints. He's had a few months to think about his first title.

"One of the things that's sweet about it, it was at the track that I started racing at, that just makes it so sweet," Broughman said. "It's sinking in more and more. We worked a long time to get it and it was worth it."

Broughman's roots in racing orginate in the modified ranks at Butler. The division returns as a weekly class to the track for the first time since 1996.

Other champions last season at Butler were Terry Sroufe (late models), Scott Gaff (sportsman), and Jarrett Rendel (street stocks).
Specials on the 2009 schedule include the All Stars late models (May 30) and All Stars winged sprint cars (July 11).
