Mackey claims opening race of season

Ken Mackey wasted little time in taking his new ride to victory lane. Mackey, who closed last season at Butler Speedway with a win in his final ride aboard the Renshaw/Bevard Motorsports mount, opened the 2009 season at the speedway with a victory as he has moved back in his family-owned #25m.

Other feature winners were Terry Sroufe (late models), Tommy Beezley (modifieds), Glenn Heath (street stocks), and Ronald McCumbers (street stocks).

Rookie Trey Smith started on the pole for the winged sprint feature, with Mackey alongside. Mackey darted into the lead and would never relinquish the point through an event that saw several cautions and was eventually shortened. Mark Aldrich started outside the second row and moved into second by the end of the opening lap and finished behind Mackey. Defending champion Mark Broughman came from a 16th-place starting spot to take third, while Nathan Bevard was fourth and Bill Jacoby, Sr. was fifth. Heat races in the sprint cars went to Aldrich, Mackey, and Nic Rogers.

Sroufe, the defending late model champ, went under Corey Bevard on lap 4 and led the remainder of the 25-lap event. Bevard and Mike Langdon made up the front row, with Bevard leading until Sroufe's pass. Eric Spangler moved to second on lap 4 and held that position at the finish. Linc Stevens was third, with Mark Wagner fourth and Matt Eagen placing fifth. Eagen moved to the class this season and is a former sportsman division champion. Late model heat races were won by Bevard and Sroufe.

The UMP modifieds were making their first Butler appearance as a regular class. Beezley won his heat race, then started up front in the feature and led every lap in a dominating performance. Zeke McKenzie took second on the final lap, with Dan McIntyre third, Ryan Cripe fourth, Terry Stratton fifth. Modified heats were won by Beezley and Bryant Dickinson.

Heath started on the pole for the sportsman feature and led throughout. Former class champ Jake Rendel finished second, with Jessi Sroufe third, Matt Rose fourth, and John Rentcher fifth. Heats went to Rendel and Matt Bell.

Early leaders in the street stock feature were Bryan Martin and John Smith. McCumbers went by Smith at the flagstand on the fourth circuit and held the top spot the rest of the way. Street stock heats were won by McCumbers, Bob Rendel, and Todd Smith.
